You Always
“You
Always”
By: Bro. Author # 5
You Always Like
To Go To Sleep
Late.
You Always
Get To The
Bathroom
First And I Have To Wait.
When You Run
My Bath Water
It’s Always
Hot.
When I Glue My Toys Together
You Always Tell Me To Stop.
You Always Beat Me At All My
Video Games.
Why Do You Always…
Do Everything
The Same?
Ok,
William.
Let Me Tell
You Something.
When You Get In
Trouble Why Do You Always
Cry?
When You Make
A Mess
Why Do You
Lie?
Why Do You Ask For More Pizza
When You Already
Ate?
Why Do You Eat More Than You Can Actually
Take?
Why Do Always Ask For Chocolate
Ice Cream
When You’ve Already Been
Fed?
Why Do You Whine When You Have To Go To
Bed?
Why Do Always Steal Cookies Out The Cookie Box?
Why Do You
Always Leave The
House With
Mix Match
Sox?
You Always Look
At Me But You
Never
Listen?
But You Zip
To The Window
When you Hear A
Motorcycle
Engine?
Why Do You
Always
Stare Into
The Sun?
And Why Do You
Think
Bumblebee
Is Better
Than
Megatron?
Why Do You Eat
Frosted Flakes
When It’s
Mushy and Mulk?
Why Do You Think
Superman Is
Better Than
The Hulk?
Why Do You
Kick Me
With
Everything
You Got?
Why Do Always
Want
Vanilla-Chocolate
Ice Cream
With
Whipped Cream
And
Cherries On Top?
So
Yes,
There are
Some Things
I Don’t Like About
You.
But No matter
What You Do
I’ll Always
Love You.
But When There
Are Times
Where We Don’t
Like Each Other,
No
Matter
What…
You
Will
Always
Be
My
Little
Brother.
If You Have A Brother
Who
Always
Gets On Your Nerves
Or Make You Angry
Sooner Or Later
You’ll Let It
Go…
And You’ll Be More Happy.
Always”

The Pet Store

Brother Author #2
The Pet Store
My mom and dad said I could get a pet from the pet store
……but I don’t know which one to get.
I walk around the pet store looking at all the pets.
I see colorful and beautiful birds and hear them chirping.
I see soft, fuzzy, and warm guinea pigs and hamsters.
I see slimy and slithery snakes swerving as they move.
I see turtles swimming and playing hide-and-seek using their shells.
I see fishes making funny faces as the swim.
I see cats meowing and purring as they stretch after there naps and play.
I see big, small, and even tall dogs barking and sticking their tongues out at me so I do the same playfully.
I see a little white and brown puppy smiling at me with is tail wagging.
“Mom, Dad” this is the pet I want.
“This girl puppy is a Border Collie,” my dad says.
Collie, I think. “That should be her name, Collie.”
“That’s a very beautiful name,” my mom responded.
A worker hands me Collie’s leash and I take her home.
2nd Grade Blues

Brother Author #1
2nd grade blues…
Finger painting, in my world, I got the blues…
Just, struggling to ride my bike that I always use…
Today, after hearing the sudden ring of the ice cream truck, I trip and fall…
Had to work, out my workbook today, couldn’t even play with my friends, I wish I could see them all…
Just got the brand new light-up, spider-man shoes, all I was trying to do was show them off outside, scuffed em’ up…
A day in school, and got a timeout, because I told my teacher to shut up!
I went to lunch, and spilled my apple juice on the floor…
This girl ate all my cookies, and still wanted more…
I lost my show-and-tell toy…
I found out it was with this boy…
I went home, only to be in trouble with my dad…
He said, my teacher said I was just being bad…
I went to my room and stumped my feet…
It was so loud you could almost hear it from the street…
My sister went to go tattle tale…
I got yelled at again, I felt so pale…
I got the 2nd grade BLUES!!!!!

Children's Stories for the Benefit of the Generation that Follows
We will write children's stories the final week of the institute. My children's story was inspired by three things, my seven-year-old son, an academic competition that took place almost three decades ago, and the preamble from a piece of text.
Twenty nine years ago, as an eleven-year-old sixth-grade student at Doolittle East Elementary, I was training for an academic competition in the Chicago Public Schools district 11. We had to compete against the math and science powerhouses in our district. Our coach, Mrs. W., told us that we could not afford to come in second. We had to be the best, and we were. We crushed the Asian, White, and African American competition. Although others were surprised, we were not.
Often times, people confuse striving for the best as conceit or arrogance. It was just our way of thinking. The members of that academic team have gone on to serve society. My main man, DRD, now works for the federal government in Washington, D.C. after earning a law degree.
Why strive for the best? I read a preamble that contained the following words:
We live in a world where millions die from easily preventable diseases.. and still more face hunger as a daily fact of life. We are locked inside a worldwide economic system that dispenses crumbs and extends privileges to a relatively small number, while forcing billions to seek desperately for work that more often than not numbs the mind, crushes the spirit and destroys the body.... We walk through our days in a world where the lives of countless children are ground up and destroyed...as victims of poverty and humiliation... their potential crushed, or their lives cut short.
I WANT TO BE... (You will see the illustrations during the institute)

I want to be
the fastest
I want to be
the smartest
I want to be
the strongest
I want to be
the coolest
I want to be
the richest
I want to be
the happiest
I want to be
the healthiest
I want to be
the nicest
I want to be
the sharpest
I want to be
the neatest
I want to be
the proudest
I want to be the
the worldliest
I want to be
the awesome-est
I want to be
the best
person ever.
My seven-year-old loved it. He added the line, I want to be the awesome-est.
Let's not be apologetic for what we want for the generation that follows.
